Summer Décor Trends for Your Outdoor Area
June 18, 2022
If you’ve recently moved into one of our homes in Portland OR, or are getting ready for the final construction to be complete, then now is a great time to think about making the most of your outdoor area. Make the most of the summer weather by creating a space outside that is as appealing as the interior of your home.
The most important element is a truly comfortable but attractive seating area. Our homes typically include covered patios, which allow you greater freedom in decorating and in how you use them. Some of our patios even include fireplaces to get the most out of it throughout the year. You could also consider a ceiling fan for an extra breeze during the warmer months. Ideally, you want your outdoor area to be as comfortable as your family room. Look for pieces that actually resemble family room furniture, or, if you prefer pieces that look more outdoorsy, ensure that you can cover them with enough pillows to make the seating comfortable. Some pieces can become too hard or leave rattan or wicker dents in you after a while.
Ideally, include a love seat, or even a swing, along with individual seats and a coffee table large enough to accommodate everyone or set up multiple smaller tables. Think about how many people you’d typically like to have seated outdoors and make sure there’s seating and table space for everyone.
Don’t be afraid of color. Look to nature, whether it’s an elegant sage green or a vibrant hibiscus pink. Consider using a solid color for the actual seating cushions and then adding fun with print throw pillows. You could create a theme or just have fun with a vibrant color palette. You could even include an outdoor rug for some more comfort and decorative elements.
Definitely consider plants, lanterns, durable colorful baskets, and even outdoor artwork to turn your patio into a second family room. There’s no reason why the patio can’t be just as appealing and stylish. Consider pieces like baskets with lids that can do double duty, looking nice and serving as storage for odds and ends, including cozy throws for when it starts to cool off so you can extend the use of your outdoor patio.
Finally, don’t forget about lighting. Look for warm lights and consider having multiple sources. Strings of lights with white paper lanterns add a soft touch when you want something more mellow, and even some strings of lights in the trees or solar lights at the base of trees can add to the atmosphere of your outdoor area, making it more magical and giving you and your guests something to look at, as well.
The key to outdoor areas is to make them as comfortable as possible. Even if you don’t have a covered patio, look for an attractive umbrella you can use when the sun is particularly warm or uncomfortably bright. Look for items that add something extra to the space instead of the standard outdoor furnishings. Let the outdoor area be just as much of a reflection of you as the indoor areas in your homes in Portland OR.
