Winter Events in Portland
December 14, 2022
It may be getting chilly, but there are plenty of fun winter events for the whole family taking place this month. If you’re moving into one of our new homes in Portland OR, here are some winter outings to keep you entertained, including annual festivities and seasonal activities.
What better way to get into the holiday spirit than The Grotto’s Christmas Festival of Lights, the largest Christmas choral festival in the world. With nearly 160 indoor holiday concerts performed by some of the region’s finest school, church and civic choirs, this is a great family outing. Each night, there are multiple indoor concerts in The Grotto’s 600-seat chapel, which is known for its cathedral-like acoustics. In addition, there’s plenty of lights, outdoor caroling, puppet shows, and a live petting zoo at the plaza. You can find some holiday gifts at The Grotto Gift Shop, and enjoy holiday food and drinks. Tickets range from $6-$14 and the event runs through December 30.
Christmas markets are always fun and a great way to find unique gifts for family and friends. The Silverton Christmas Market at the Oregon Garden Resort draws inspiration from German Christmas markets. You’ll find numerous artisans selling their wares, including imported German nutcrackers and ornaments, but there’s so much more to enjoy. Along with the million lights draped along the paths of the market that are a sight to behold, you can visit with Santa, take a ride down the snowless tubing hill, get warm next to the wood-burning fire pit, and enjoy live music and local beers at the Biergarten. Tickets range from $15-$18 and must be purchased online. The event runs through January 1, except for December 24 and 25.
There’s also the OJA Portland Market at 1315 NW Overton Street. This is a free indoor market open select days through December 31, which highlights the depth of Portland’s diverse communities. You’ll enjoy art, culture, food, music, retail, a photo lounge, and live entertainment. Plus, it’s also a chance to give back to the community, as there is a winter shoes and clothing collection taking place. Donations of gently used or new winter shoes and clothing for all ages will be accepted for those who need a little extra help staying warm.
Finally, don’t miss the Christmas Ships Parade. What started with a single ribbon-clad sailboat from the Portland Yacht Club in the 1950s is now a decades-long Christmas tradition with 50-60 decorated boats and yachts parading along the waterfronts of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. They gather at various locations along the rivers and follow different loops each night through December 21. Check the official website for times and locations of this free event.
These are just some of the winter holiday events to look forward to this month. There are still plenty of upcoming events in the new year to make the tail end of winter a little brighter and more entertaining. Plus, there’s always skiing and snowboarding on Mt. Hood.
